What’s Next For Wisconsin Schools
As I reflect on the start of year three for me as Superintendent and we move further into the school year, I find myself reflecting on the future of education here in Wisconsin—and especially in our own Tomorrow River community. Schools have always been a reflection of the times we live in, and today’s world is changing faster than ever. From new technologies to shifting demographics, the question isn’t just what’s next for our schools, but how we can work together to ensure every student thrives.
One of the biggest shifts on the horizon is the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. When used thoughtfully, AI can help personalize learning and give teachers better insights into how to support each student. But with that innovation comes a new responsibility—to teach our students digital wellness, balance, and the importance of using technology safely and ethically.
In Tomorrow River, we have created a 3 tiered matrix for helping students understand when it is appropriate and how to use it. Preparing our students to be future ready means helping them become critical thinkers and responsible digital citizens.
At the same time as we work on digital skills, many Wisconsin districts are facing declining enrollment. Fewer students often mean tighter budgets, and that makes it harder to maintain the same programs and services families have come to expect. In Tomorrow River, we are fortunate to benefit from our open enrollment, which has increased our enrollment slightly from last year, even though our in-district student population is down. This open enrollment has helped sustain us as a district. When we add in unfunded mandates from state and federal levels and schools are asked to do more with fewer resources, amidst an increasing inflation. Regardless of those hurdles, our teachers, support staff, and community find creative ways to stretch every dollar while keeping our focus on students and learning.
The political landscape surrounding education has also grown more complex. Policy debates and funding discussions can easily overshadow the daily work happening inside our classroom. As I walk our hallways (or the woods at TRCCS), I hear engagement and laughter, I see learning and connections, and our students are making growth every day. It’s essential that we keep education above politics and remember that strong schools are the foundation of strong communities. When we come together we can ensure decisions reflect what’s best for kids, not just what’s popular in headlines. That is one of the strongest parts of our Tomorrow River community.
Despite these challenges, I am truly filled with optimism. Wisconsin has a proud tradition of educational excellence, and our Tomorrow River community is one of support, distinction, and pride. The future of our schools will be shaped not only by new technologies or new policy, but by our shared belief in the importance of education. That belief opens doors, inspires dreams, and strengthens our community. Thank you for your partnership and support. We are better together.
