AHS Return to School: September Schedule

Hello High School Students and Families,

This letter has a lot of useful information for the upcoming school year at Amherst High School. Please read everything carefully.

At our last board meeting, the school board approved splitting up the students by last name. For the first two weeks of school, students with a last name that begins with A-L will come to school on Tuesday and Wednesday. The students with a last name that begins with M-Z will come to school on Thursday and Friday. If there are multiple last names in the same household that would send children with different groups, those students will come to school with the M-Z group. In the approved plan, all students would return to school Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday beginning September 14. You will be notified if plans change. Also, we will not be holding Open House on Wednesday, August 26 this year to minimize traffic in the building.

All students who are signed up to virtually follow their schedule will attend their class virtually with the M-Z group. Virtual students will be placed in a Google Classroom of their class. More information on expectations will be shared with students from their teacher. Students who chose the APEX format will receive additional information soon regarding schedules and expectations.

To summarize, here is the schedule for the first two weeks:

September 1 and 2:  A-L

September 3 and 4:  M-Z and all virtual students following their class schedule from home

September 8 and 9:  A-L

September 10 and 11:  M-Z and all virtual students following their class schedule from home

Beginning September 14: All students will come to school Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Wednesdays will be virtual for all students; no face-to-face classes will be held. Virtual students would join class each day from home, as well.

APEX Students:  More information will come directly to you from Mike Klieforth and Rose McGuire

Technology is a priority when it comes to planning for multiple ways of learning. The Tomorrow River School District has purchased enough Chromebooks to check one out to every student. The issue is that these Chromebooks will not arrive until the end of September or the beginning of October. Once they arrive, we will need to get them cataloged and set up in our system. We are asking any students who have a Chromebook or laptop at home to bring it to school every day if they are comfortable doing this. Once we have enough Chromebooks for all high school students, we will check one out to each student.

I have created a new survey to see which students will need a Chromebook checked out to them. Please fill out the survey and let us know if you can bring your own device or if you need one checked out at the beginning the school year. The link to the survey can be found in the email that was sent home or on the high school webpage. If you are reading this digitally, the link is https://forms.gle/wn1PxBRu9v54LyR49. Please complete the survey by Friday, August 21.

A Note About Open House

Because we will not be holding an Open House this year, please fill out your yearly paperwork using Skyward Family/Student Access. If you don’t know your username/password, please call the HS Office at 715-824-5522 Monday through Thursday 8am to 3pm. The forms you need to complete in Skyward are:

  • Technology Acceptable Use & Field Trip Form (only necessary once during high school, beginning this year)
  • Military Opt Out Form (only necessary once during high school, beginning this year)
  • 2020-21 Parking Permit (if student will be parking a car at school)
  • Chromebook Agreement (to be filled out once Chromebooks are ready to be checked out)

There are also two forms that should be filled out on the AHS website (www.amherst.k12.wi.us). The Amherst Emergency Illness / Health History Form should be submitted each year, while the Amherst Emergency Notification Info form should be completed if you have a new phone number or email address, or if you aren’t sure that you are receiving all electronic correspondence from the school. Remember that lunch money fees, student fees, course fees (such as art classes), and parking fees can all be paid online, or you can mail a check to the HS Office. All fees can be combined except lunch money, which should remain separate. At this point, we are not selling season passes, and we are not collecting athletic fees.

Thank you for your time, and please feel free to contact me at mklieforth@amherst.k12.wi.us with any questions. I know this situation isn’t ideal, but I can assure you that we will do everything in our power to provide a quality education for our students.
