The Central Wisconsin Math League was started in 1970 as a joint venture of 22 area high schools, Sentry Insurance Company, Wausau Insurance Companies and UWSP. The idea was to create an interest in the subject of mathematics in high school students while they are participating in their mathematics courses and to expose them to some of the great careers relating to mathematics, particularly in the insurance field.
The league is composed of interested high schools in the UWSP area. The schools are divided into four classes according to enrollment. The league meets on the campus of UWSP three times during the academic year. The date and time of each meet is determined by a vote of the participating schools. The meet normally lasts no more than one and a half hours.
At Amherst High School, the chosen math league teammates are chosen by the math department members based on which class they were last in for the corresponding competition category.
