Social Studies 7: Civics
Civics is the branch of Social Studies in which we learn about the way our government works and the important roles all of us have in our American system of democracy. In this class, students will work on units covering the U.S. Constitution, American political parties, the American election process, and the structure and function of the local, state, and national levels of American government.
The purpose of Reading 7 is fourfold. In Reading 7, students will work to continue to develop and practice important reading strategies. They will also work to develop literary analysis skill through an understanding of the elements of fiction. Thirdly, students will use various exercises to develop written responses to both short answers and essay-style questions. The fourth purpose is for students to direct their individual reading improvement through the Accelerated Reader program.
In Reading 8, students will continue to develop essential reading skill and strategies as outlined in Reading 7. Written response activities, journaling, book card data, and book talk presentations will be integrated throughout the students' work. They will continue to use the Accelerated Reading program to direct their individual reading improvement.
